Admission Criteria for the PSP in Bioethics

Categories of candidates for admission to the PSP in Bioethics

The Bioethics PSP accepts applicants who hold a first-cycle degree from a University or a Technological Educational Institute (T.E.I.)  in Greece or from an equivalent institution abroad.

The Secretariat checks whether the institution awarding the foreign degree is listed in the National Register of Recognized Institutions Abroad and whether the type of degree is listed in the National Register of

Types of Degrees Awarded by Recognized Institutions posted on the DOATAP website.

Graduates of Health and Life Sciences, Medicine and related Sciences, such as Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry, Biology, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Health Laboratories, as well as graduates from Departments of Psychology, Social Administration, Social Work and related fields, Humanities, Law and Social Sciences, Departments of Natural and Technological Sciences, Economics and Informatics are accepted to the PGMP.

Candidates are divided into the following categories:

Category A: Graduates of Health and Life Sciences, medical specialists, trainees in any specialty, as well as medical graduates without a specialty who have not applied to begin a specialty. Also graduates of Faculties and Departments of Health and Psychology Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Physical Education and Sports Science.

Category B: Graduates of Humanities, Law and Social Sciences, Law Faculties, Political Sciences, Theology, Philosophy, Social Administration and Social Work and related fields.

Category C: Graduates of Natural and Technological Sciences, Economics and Information Technology.

Category D: Graduates of other Faculties and Departments provided for in these Regulations.

Upon request, they may be registered as supernumerary members of the permanent EEP (Special Teaching Staff) or ETEP (Special Technical Laboratory Staff) and salaried lawyers, and only one per year and per PGMP, provided that they serve in the relevant Department and their degree and the work they perform in the relevant Department are related to the domain of the PGMP.

Foreign students admitted to the “ Postgraduate Study Program in Bioethics” must have sufficient knowledge of the Greek language, which is determined after an interview. The above provision applies to prospective postgraduate students who have not completed secondary education in Greece or in a Greek-speaking school abroad.

The competent Secretariat checks whether the institution awarding the foreign qualification is included in the National Register of Recognized Foreign Institutions and whether the type of qualification is included in the National Registry of Degree Types from Recognized Foreign Institutions, published on the website of DOATAP (Hellenic National Academic Recognition and Information Center).

Selection procedure for applicants – enrollment in the PSP in Bioethics

The selection process for postgraduate students consists of three stages:

Indicatively:

  • Stage A:

Submission of an online application to the following e-mail address:

  1. Application for participation in the selection process for the postgraduate program (printed- electronic).
  2. Copy of degree and other academic qualifications (with the required translations and certifications as provided for in the provisions in force for foreign qualifications)
  3. Photocopy of identity card
  4. One recent photograph
  5. Proof of knowledge of English or another European language or a solemn declaration of satisfactory language proficiency (to be assessed during the oral exam).
  6. Proof of another foreign language as supplementary
  7. Curriculum vitae detailing studies, scientific, research, and professional experience.
  8. Copies of publications (full publication in a journal in copy or full details of the journal and copy of the abstract), announcements (copy of the abstract from the book of abstracts only)
  9. Supporting documents relating to the above-mentioned scoring criteria.
  10. The necessary electronic equipment for each student for effective participation in the PGMP is as follows:

Computer (desktop or laptop) with camera and speakers or headphones, microphone, and internet connection.

 Candidates are advised to carefully check the instructions for each individual criterion for scoring, so that the application file is submitted complete on the dates specified in the call for expressions of interest. In addition, incomplete or late documents will not be accepted.

The exact procedure is described in each call for applications.

  • Stage B

During the second stage, the candidates’ files are examined and evaluated. Incomplete files will not be considered. The maximum score for each file is 40 points.

The selection criteria for the Bioethics PSP are as follows:

  1. Degree/Diploma grade from a University or Technological Educational Institute (T.E.I.) undergraduate program up to 10 points
  2. Relevant research or professional activity of the candidate related to the subject area of the M.Sc. program up to 10 points
  3. Participation in publications in an international medical journal or related journal with impact factor up to 10 points
  4. Knowledge of foreign languages up to 5 points
  5. Other Publications and writing activity in the field of Bioethics up to 5 points

The maximum number of points is 40. The method of evaluation of the above criteria is the responsibility of the Departmental Assembly and is described in the call for expressions of interest. 

  • Stage C (interview)

Interviews are conducted by members of the Admissions Selection Committee on topics related to technical expertise and familiarity with research and bioethics, as well as topics of broader scientific and social interest. The maximum number of points that can be awarded for the interview is 60.

The selection of candidates for admission to the PSP is made by a three-member committee of faculty members (DEP) of the Department (or Departments in the case of interdepartmental, interinstitutional, or joint PGMPs) who have undertaken postgraduate work, which is formed by decision of the Assembly.
The selection of candidates for admission to the PSPof the DUTH is carried out in accordance with the provisions and regulations of these Regulations.
The Secretariat of the Postgraduate Program compiles a complete list of candidates and forwards it to the Admissions Selection Committee (ASC), which:
a) rejects candidates who do not meet the requirements,
b) ranks the candidates according to their scores and carries out the prepublication of the provisional selection list and announces the deadline for appeals,
c) invites to an interview (if applicable) those candidates who are selected by the Admissions Committee.
After examining the applications and based on the final score of each candidate, the Admissions Selection Committee draws up the final ranking list of candidates, in descending order of score. The list indicates the successful candidates and the runners-up.
The list is approved by the Assembly and posted. It is posted in accordance with the provisions on personal data protection on the website of the Postgraduate Program and in the announcements of the Department.
The Department Secretariat posts the evaluation results on the Department’s website, in accordance with the applicable provisions on personal data protection, informs the candidates, registers the successful candidates in the Register of Postgraduate Students (RPS) of the Department and the Democritus University of Thrace, and sends them the Regulations of the Postgraduate Program and the Institution, the Internal Regulations, the Code of Academic Conduct, and any other information document that the Department deems necessary.
Successful applicants are requested to respond in writing within a specific deadline set in the Internal Regulations of each PSP, if they accept a) their enrollment in the PGMP and b) the Regulations that have been sent to them and the terms of operation of the PGMP. Late responses will not be accepted. Successful candidates must submit the relevant supporting documents in person or by post or e-mail. Enrolment is considered complete, when all the required supporting documents have been submitted.
The places of successful candidates who fail to register by the deadline will be filled by other candidates from the list of runner-ups in order of success.

Upon enrollment in the PSP, students receive the annual Academic Calendar of the Program from the Secretariat.
Postgraduate students may be remunerated from funds originating from nationally and internationally funded research programs, co-funded programs (e.g., NSRF), private funds, and their own funds. They may also receive scholarships from national or international bodies and institutions, from co-funded programs (e.g., NSRF), private and own resources according to the specific regulatory framework of the funding body.
The Postgraduate students may enter into scholarship agreements through the Special Account for Research Funds (ELKE) of the DUTH, as defined in the applicable legislation and in the ELKE Funding and Management Guide of the DUTH.
